On February 5th 1920 the RAF College Cranwell was inaugurated with an entry of 52 cadets comprised of 2 sub-lieutenants and 17 midshipmen transferred from the Navy, and 33 entrants from public schools.

"Marooned in the wilderness, cut off from pastimes they could not organise for themselves, the cadets would find life cheaper, healthier and more wholesome."

Gp. Capt. E. B. Haslam
